Description The first-ever costume design and art book themed around the unique world of sumo: the “kesho-mawashi” and “some-nuki kimono.” The “kesho-mawashi” is a decorative silk apron worn by rikishi during the ring-entering ceremony, while the “some-nuki kimono” is a dyed kimono worn during tournaments and regional tours from spring through autumn. These garments, a privilege granted only to wrestlers of certain ranks, are handcrafted by traditional artisans, making each one a singular masterpiece created exclusively for its wearer. This book features design sketches and preliminary drawings rarely seen by the public, along with detailed explanations of precious kesho-mawashi housed in the Sumo Museum and photos of rikishi wearing these outfits (bilingual in Japanese and English, full color, 208 pages). It also includes exclusive coverage and photography from the workshops of craftsmen who create kesho-mawashi, long-established Kyoto yuzen kimono makers, and weaving studios specializing in mawashi production.
