Description The definitive book compiling original illustrations, film-making materials, and image boards that encapsulate the world of the animated work “Angel’s Egg” is finally back in a long-awaited reissue. Released as an OVA in 1985, “Angel’s Egg” is a legendary collaboration between the visionary Mamoru Oshii—known for revolutionizing anime and film with works like “Urusei Yatsura 2: Beautiful Dreamer”, “GHOST IN THE SHELL”, and “Innocence”—and Yoshitaka Amano, who would go on to become a globally acclaimed illustrator. Together, they depicted a fantastical, otherworldly realm. Composed in a near-monochrome palette, with minimal dialogue, extended long takes, and only around 400 cuts—about one-third the number of a typical animation—the film’s ascetic style embodies a deeply resonant theme that permeates all of Oshii’s work: doubt in the existence of the self. For Oshii, this was his first original project, marking an undeniable milestone and the beginning of his journey as a creator. In 2025, marking the film’s 40th anniversary, the announcement of a 4K remastered version of “Angel’s Egg” garnered major attention not only in Japan but around the world. Furthermore, through screenings at international film festivals such as Cannes and the Annecy International Animation Film Festival, the film has been newly re-evaluated four decades after its release.
