Studied under Kiyoji Otsuji at the School of Art and Design, University of Tsukuba. Completed a master’s degree at the Graduate School of Art and Design at the same university in 1984. Since then, has participated in numerous solo and group exhibitions in Japan and abroad. Received the 22nd Kimura Ihei Photography Award in 1997 for the photo book “LIME WORKS” and the exhibition “Model of a City” held at Gallery NW House. Participated in the 49th Venice Biennale in 2001 and received the 42nd Mainichi Art Award. Received the Minister of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology’s Art Encouragement Prize in 2012. Participated in the Japan Pavilion at the 13th Venice Biennale of Architecture in 2012, which won the Golden Lion. In 2025, was elected a member of the Japan Art Academy. Major publications include “BLAST” (Shogakukan), “Kesen River” (Kawade Shobo Shinsha), and “Rikuzentakata 2011–2014” (Kawade Shobo Shinsha). Their works are included in public collections such as the Tate, the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, the European House of Photography, the Swiss Foundation for Photography, the National Museum of Modern Art, Tokyo, the Tokyo Photographic Art Museum, and the National Museum of Art, Osaka.
