The exhibition was a retrospective of sorts—admittedly a bit premature—bringing together a massive number of representative works I’ve photographed around the world over the past 20-plus years. Structured in two parts—my signature “Kikai Heritage” series and “World”—this book, too, becomes a culmination of those two perspectives, blended into one. In addition to the exhibition archive, the book also includes all the photos I newly captured and added to the exhibition during its touring period. By the time the show traveled to its second venue, the Kochi Prefectural Museum of Art, the global pandemic had begun to subside, and I resumed my travels. Starting with visits to Thailand and India, then moving on to Central Asia and Vanuatu, I added photographs taken during those journeys in something akin to real time. These are compiled here as “Kikai / World EXTRA I.” Furthermore, this book includes photos I began taking in early 2024 of the Noto Peninsula. This project was initiated by musician Yumi Matsutoya and, with the cooperation of Ishikawa and Tokyo prefectures, involved multiple photography trips across the peninsula following the earthquake that struck on New Year’s Day 2024. What is captured there overlaps with themes explored in “Kikai / World” such as inhabitation, ruins, and nature—offering a profound depiction of the relationship between people and nature. As a record of this era, I decided to include these as well. As a result, this book spans from around 2002, when I began my journey, to 2025, and has become a comprehensive collection of my work. It is no exaggeration to say that all the themes I’ve pursued across the globe are, for now at least, contained within these pages.
